Woodland Adventurers’ outdoor kindergarten, an outdoor preschool nursery located in Box, Corsham in Wiltshire has been graded as “outstanding” in their first Ofsted inspection.
At Woodland Adventurers, children from the age of 3 years spend all their time learning in the outdoors, in all weathers; taking a more Scandinavian-style approach to education. Children have 4 acres of woodland to learn and play in where they have campfires, use tools and feed farm animals, as well as go for hikes in the local countryside.
The Ofsted report is glowing with positivity throughout, such as “all children make substantial and sustained progress consistently in all areas of learning” and “children’s physical health and emotional well-being benefit greatly from the opportunity to learn in the open air with a range of natural materials and outdoor experiences”.
Chris Harvey (Director) is delighted with the “outstanding” result and is keen to recognize that this outcome is the result of a highly dedicated team who are all passionate about making a positive contribution to children’s lives through connecting them with real experiences in the natural world “it is overwhelming to achieve the result that the whole team deserve through their hard work and dedication, as well as their attention to detail in striving for excellence. Our team is proving that children’s happiness and learning thrives in leaps and bounds when they are immersed in nature”.

New Woodland Adventurers® Outdoor Kindergartens - Wednesday 15th July 2015
Based in Box, Wiltshire and Monkton Farleigh, Wiltshire
New Woodland Adventurers Outdoor Kindergartens / Forest School Kindergartens (children's preschools / nurseries) in the South West
Woodland Adventurers® is delighted to be offering a different approach to child-care for families in and around Bath and North Wiltshire.
We look at the world from a child’s perspective. We believe that children are the happiest when they are outdoors - gaining a sense of freedom to explore, to play and make friends in a friendly and positive environment. So we use the outdoors as our classroom each and every day. We place outdoor learning and forest school at the heart of everything we do.
We embrace nature’s seasons through our activities, enjoying woodland and the countryside and all their sensory offerings – bird song, wind, rain, shine, new life, life cycles, habitats, weather, colours, patterns, textures and smells. We even take time to daydream, watching the clouds and the trees in the breeze or to run across the fields with the wind in our hair.
We feed and care for farm animals – our pigs, sheep, chickens, ducks, geese, guinea pigs and rabbits as well as their spring and summer newborns.
We plant, nurture and harvest our own seasonal fruit and vegetables. We cook and bake our produce into the most interesting culinary delights, just in time for tasting at pickup time!
We play with mud kitchens, we dig, we dance, we get mucky, make potions and we build dens perfect for survival, imaginary games and often fit for a princess. We also enjoy popping corn whilst we sing campfire songs and read stories together, before venturing on a bear hunt or other adventurous discovery.
And of course, we may even retreat to the cosy indoors in the wildest of weathers or just because the children want to!
We do everything you would expect from an Ofsted-registered setting delivering the Early Years Foundation Stage. We just do it differently. Our staff are caring, fun-loving, highly qualified and they just love being outdoors, all year round.
In June 2015 we opened our first Woodland Adventurers® Outdoor Kindergarten in Box, which is already going from strength to strength.
We are now also delighted to announce the opening of our second Woodland Adventurers® Outdoor Kindergarten in Monkton Farleigh.
Both locations accept free early education entitlement for 3-4 year olds for a limited number of places.

Westonbirt, The National Arboretum announces partnership with Woodland Adventurers to provide outdoor learning
The Forestry Commission’s National Arboretum at Westonbirt has announced a partnership with Woodland Adventurers, a leading provider of outdoor learning, to run exciting activities connecting children to nature.
This is the first time that early years learning programmes, designed for children under the age of five, have been available at Westonbirt. Woodland Adventurers will be working in partnership with the arboretum’s in-house learning team who already run family events and school activities as part of the Forestry Commission learning strategy.
The early year’s sessions will be full of storytelling, singing, discovery and adventure in the magical environment of the arboretum. From mini beast hunts, to outdoor sing song and crazy leaf bugs, there is a huge range of fun outdoor activities on offer.
The programme will be open to schools and groups aged five and under and has been specifically designed to help the young visitors engage with and learn about nature through hands-on activities.
Chris Harvey, joint owner at Woodland Adventurers said:
"Woodland Adventurers is delighted to be partnering with Westonbirt, The National Arboretum to provide inspirational learning experiences that connect young children with nature and the outdoors.
“Our sessions bring the early year’s foundation stage to life through nature based activities which support the Forestry Commission's learning strategy. Using stories such as ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears’ and ‘The Very Busy Spider’; the children can join us on adventures through the arboretum where learning is exciting and fun."
Ben Oliver, Forestry Commission learning and participation manager at Westonbirt commented:
“We are thrilled to be working alongside Woodland Adventurers to deliver early years learning. This is a great opportunity to extend learning programmes to our youngest visitors, inspiring the next generation to the beauty of trees and nature. We are impressed by Woodland Adventurer’s range of activities and their passion to engage children with nature and the outdoors through fun hands on activities; they are the perfect team to deliver our preschool programmes on-site.”
Husband and wife team Debbie and Chris who run Woodland Adventurers, purchased woodland of their own to give their children the freedom to enjoy the outdoors, before expanding it to provide for a wider market of schools and groups. They now run woodland birthday parties, pre-school visits and group activity days to help children discover nature.
The early years programme at Westonbirt, The National Arboretum, will start from September 2014 for more information please visit http://www.woodlandadventurers.org/westonbirt-the-national-arboretum.html
