Winter planting

18/9/2023

So we've decided to plant some winter crops. It sounds a challenge and counter intuitive (as Spring seems to be our usual focused growing season), yet we are going to give it a go and hopefully nurture some culinary plants through the Autumn and Winter for the table.

This is a new "adventure" and heaps of learning to be gained as quickly as possible.

Perhaps its the best time of the year to start as our expectations are low and so anything that succeeds will be very exciting and a success.

We have considered the exposure of the outdoors and so are planning to use a poly tunnel or greenhouse to give them more of a fighting chance (without heating).

Current considerations are planting for crops of broad bean, onion, pea, Chinese cabbage, carrot, cauliflower, beetroots, lettuce, parsley, rocket, spinach, kale celery, chicory and chard. Our research for these and others is just beginning and time is quickly running out...Eeek!!! It sounds like we need many of these sown by the end-September to be in with a chance! Only a week and a half left and the summer crops need to be cleared away.

Sounds like a formidable task and probably good to have set our expectations low :-).
